John Lopez of the Houston Chronicle wrote an editorial in the Feb. 4, 2007 paper which opened my eyes. While not taking anything away from what Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith have done throughout their careers, he points out what he sees as hypocrisy.
Tom Flores was the first Hispanic coach in the Super Bowl and the first Hispanic coach to win. He won with an Hispanic quarterback, Jim Plunkett. (I’ve been under the impression that Plunkett’s ethnicity is American Indian.)
Tom Flores went on to be a general manager and a president of an NFL team. He was among the nominees for the 2007 class in the NFL Hall of Fame. He was not selected. Hopefully, next year will see this corrected.
With all the hoopla around this Super Bowl and their accomplishments this season, it seems that Dungy and Smith are likely headed to the Hall of Fame. Surely, Tom Flores also deserves to be in the Hall as much as (arguably more so) than these two.
