Yahoo! has a press release about a class action settlement with Microsoft. The allegations in the suit include violations of Arkansas law pertaining to anti-trust and unfair competition (among others). The value of the settlement is set at $37.8 million.
The settlement is in the form of vouchers which are claimed to be redeemable for software and hardware purchases regardless of manufacturer. Of course this is retail price and Microsoft’s exposure is less than $37.8 million. In fact any Microsoft software obtained through the voucher would cost Microsoft essentially nothing. I’ll bet that any computers obtained using the vouchers are pre-loaded with Windows (Vista?), thereby keeping the class as further victims of Microsoft’s practices.
We’ll have to see if there are any follow-ups after the voucher program is in place, but I’ll bet this is the last we hear about it.
